Decisions, Decisions

As a husband and wife trucking team we have many business decisions that we need to make on a daily basis. As a husband and wife we have personal decisions that we need to make as well. Today's blog is going to talk about decisions we have made as well as decisions we are trying to make.

You might be wondering what decisions are so important that someone needs to write a blog about it. When the decisions alter our financial well-being, making the right decisions can be the difference between taking some financial risks or living in financial tranquility. So let's put the decisions out there.

One decision that we have already made is that we do not plan on purchasing another new truck. As we get older, the runway to earn grows shorter. With that in mind our thoughts of earning to retire are the focus. Plus, we love our truck! Equipment is the most expensive part of the trucking business. As long as we maintain the equipment we believe that our truck will last for many more years. We will boost our maintenance savings so that in the event that the truck needs a major repair, we have the funds available to make the repair as well as having the ability to live while the truck is in the shop.

The next decision we are facing is that of life AFTER trucking. We each have interests that we had before we got into trucking. The trucking lifestyle has prevented us from nurturing those interests. A while back we had a "dream" conversation about what retirement would look like to us. During that conversation we both talked about ideas that we have. Some of our ideas include adding to our property (which will cost hundreds of thousands of dollars) while other ideas included having somewhere to go when the weather at home gets cold. Some of you might say, "So what's the problem?" The problem for us is trying to anticipate the future. What does that mean? We cannot predict the future. There are so many "what ifs." For example: what if one or both of our health fails? We are fine right now but we cannot know what the future holds. What if the market takes longer to recover? Our decisions can only be made based on the current economy. We cannot even begin to know what the future economic environment will look like.

Have you had these thoughts in your life? Do you have a game plan in place for what your life looks like outside of trucking? Have you thought about how to fund that life? Would you be willing to go into debt now to be ready for your future? These are the same questions we are trying to answer now. Let us know what you think.

Here's to millions of safe, profitable and BEST DECISION miles.
