Operation Safe Driver Week 2025
The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) has officially announced that this year's Operation Safe Driver Week will take place from July 13 to July 19, 2025. This annual initiative focuses on improving driving behaviors across North America through a coordinated effort of law enforcement, public education, and industry outreach.
Operation Safe Driver Week is a collaborative campaign conducted in Canada, the United States, and Mexico, targeting both commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers and passenger vehicle drivers. Law enforcement officers will be actively monitoring roads for individuals engaging in unsafe driving behaviors, including speeding, distracted driving, following too closely, aggressive lane changes, and driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Drivers found violating traffic laws will be subject to warnings or citations depending on the severity of the offense.
Taking Care to Drive Safely
The focus of the 2025 campaign is on reckless, careless, and dangerous driving, which includes operating a vehicle without due care or consideration for other drivers or pedestrians. The CVSA defines these behaviors as any action behind the wheel that puts others at risk, often driven by distraction, impairment, or disregard for traffic laws.
These enforcement efforts come at a critical time. According to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 42,514 people were killed in traffic crashes in 2022. Similarly, Transport Canada reported 1,931 fatalities, and Mexico experienced 15,979 road deaths that same year. These sobering statistics highlight the urgent need for action to reduce crash-related injuries and fatalities across North American roads.
Education is Key
Enforcement is only one part of the strategy. Operation Safe Driver Week also includes educational initiatives to raise awareness and promote long-term behavioral change. The CVSA provides a variety of free resources for both teen and new drivers, as well as experienced commercial drivers. These include informative brochures, public service announcement (PSA) videos, and multilingual outreach materials-all aimed at encouraging safer driving habits.
As part of this year's outreach efforts, the CVSA is offering free Operation Safe Driver Week postcards to its members in law enforcement and the transportation industry. These postcards are available in English, French, and Spanish, ensuring that important safety messages reach a diverse audience across North America.
By combining targeted enforcement with widespread education, Operation Safe Driver Week serves as a vital effort to reduce the number of preventable crashes caused by risky driving behaviors. Whether you're a commercial truck driver, a parent teaching a teenager to drive, or a daily commuter, this initiative is a powerful reminder of the importance of safety behind the wheel.
As July approaches, all drivers are encouraged to review their habits and commit to safer practices. Operation Safe Driver Week is not just about avoiding citations, it's about saving lives and making our roads safer for everyone.
