Where Do You Park?

Finding safe and reliable parking is one of the biggest ongoing challenges in the trucking industry. Every driver understands that semi-truck parking is limited, especially during peak evening hours when drivers are trying to comply with Hours of Service regulations. The struggle to find a place to stop for a mandatory 30-minute break or an overnight rest period is something nearly every truck driver experiences on a regular basis. It is common to see drivers parked in fuel islands while they take their break, simply because there are no available parking spaces elsewhere. Many times a driver can be spotted heading into a truck stop carrying a duffle bag, planning to grab a shower, eat a meal, and settle in for the night.

The challenge becomes even greater when trying to find parking for a required 10-hour break or a 34-hour reset. While my husband prefers staying at truck stops, I personally try to avoid them whenever possible. Instead, I would rather take a short break at a rest area or even a scale house parking lot if it is permitted.

When it comes to taking a 34-hour reset, we often search for alternatives to crowded truck stops. Since many truck stops now charge for overnight parking, we prefer to spend our money somewhere that feels safer, quieter, and more comfortable. One option that has worked particularly well for us is a membership program called Passport America. Essentially, Passport America operates like a discount camping club for RV parks across the country. By paying an annual membership fee, we gain access to participating RV parks that offer discounted overnight rates, often at half the regular cost. For example, a campsite that normally costs fifty dollars may only cost us twenty-five dollars as members.

Each campground has its own rules and restrictions, and discounts are not always available on weekends, but overall we have had many positive experiences. Some campgrounds are places we would not visit again, while others are destinations we look forward to returning to whenever possible. Like any travel experience, some locations are simply better than others. One of the biggest advantages of staying at campgrounds is that we can plug into shore power instead of running the truck's generator continuously for two days. Although we may pay for the campsite, we often save money on fuel and reduce wear and tear on our equipment.

Occasionally, we also park at casinos that allow semi-truck parking. Casinos often provide secure parking areas along with access to restaurants and entertainment, making them another appealing option during longer breaks. No matter where drivers choose to park, safety should always remain the top priority. Finding a location that allows for proper rest and peace of mind can make a significant difference in life on the road.

Here's to millions of safe and profitable miles.
