Halfway There

We're halfway through 2026. So, here's an important question: Is your trucking business where you expected it to be?

When the year began, you likely had goals in mind. Maybe you planned to add another truck, increase revenue, reduce operating costs, hire another driver, or simply improve profitability. Now is the time to step back and evaluate where things stand.
Are your numbers where you expected them to be? Are you ahead of schedule, or have rising fuel prices, unexpected repairs, slower freight, or changing market conditions put you behind? The trucking industry is constantly changing. Even the best-laid plans often need to be adjusted.

One of the biggest advantages small trucking business owners have is the ability to adapt quickly. But that only happens when you know exactly where your business stands.

Start by looking at your financials. Is each truck generating the revenue it should? Are maintenance costs staying within budget, or are repairs eating into your profits? Has your fuel expense increased more than expected? Are you collecting payments promptly and maintaining healthy cash flow? Knowing these numbers helps you make better decisions instead of relying on gut instinct.

Next, look beyond the financial reports. What's working well? Have you built stronger relationships with shippers or brokers? Have your drivers maintained strong safety records? Are your routes more efficient than they were six months ago? Every success is something you can build upon during the second half of the year.

At the same time, be honest about what needs attention. Is equipment downtime becoming too frequent? Are insurance costs affecting your margins? Are empty miles reducing profitability? Could technology, better scheduling, or improved maintenance planning help you operate more efficiently?

As trucking business owners, these are questions we should ask ourselves regularly. Successful carriers don't simply set goals in January and hope everything falls into place. They continually measure performance, adjust to changing conditions, and make decisions based on accurate information.

The good news is there's still plenty of time left in 2026 to make meaningful improvements. A few smart adjustments today can have a significant impact by year-end. Whether it's tightening expenses, reviewing your rates, improving maintenance schedules, or finding more profitable freight opportunities, the second half of the year is your chance to finish strong.

So, ask yourself: Is your trucking business where you want it to be? If the answer is yes, keep building on that momentum. If the answer is no, don't view it as a setback. Instead, see it as an opportunity to reset your course, strengthen your operation, and finish 2026 in a stronger position than where you started.

Here’s to millions of safe, profitable and STRONG miles.
