How Do You Prepare?

Every driver has their own way of preparing to head back out on the road after spending time at home. Whether you've been home for a weekend or a full week, getting back into work mode takes a little planning. A good routine can make the transition smoother, reduce stress, and help you start your trip focused and ready for whatever the miles bring.

For many truck drivers, preparation begins the day before departure. Instead of scrambling at the last minute, it's easier to pack everything you'll need ahead of time. Clean clothes, toiletries, medications, work gloves, chargers, and any personal items should all be packed and checked off before bedtime. Having everything in one place saves time and helps prevent those frustrating moments when you realize you forgot something after you've already left.

A simple checklist can be one of the most valuable tools a driver has. It doesn't have to be complicated. Many drivers keep a written list or use the notes app on their phone to make sure they have everything they need. Items like your CDL, medical card, fuel card, log-in information, paperwork, and wallet are just as important as your clothes and food. Crossing each item off the list gives you peace of mind before you pull out of the driveway.

Meal preparation is another important step. Eating healthier on the road is much easier when you bring food from home. Many drivers spend part of their time off cooking meals, portioning snacks, and stocking the truck's refrigerator with sandwiches, fruit, vegetables, or leftovers. Not only can this save money, but it also helps you avoid relying on truck stop fast food for every meal.

Getting enough rest before leaving is something that's often overlooked. It's tempting to stay up late trying to squeeze in a few extra hours with family, but starting a trip already tired can make the first day much more difficult. A good night's sleep helps you stay alert, focused, and ready for the demands of the road.

Many drivers also use their home time to take care of personal business. Paying bills, attending appointments, spending quality time with loved ones, and handling household chores allows you to leave home with fewer distractions on your mind. Knowing everything is taken care of makes it easier to focus on driving safely.

Finally, take a few minutes before you leave to mentally prepare for the trip ahead. Review your load information, check the weather forecast, think about your route, and set realistic expectations for the days ahead. Every trip is different, but a consistent routine helps you stay organized and confident.

There isn't one perfect routine that works for everyone. The best system is the one that keeps you prepared, reduces stress, and gets you back on the road safely. A little planning before you leave home can make all the difference once the wheels start rolling.

Here’s to millions of safe, profitable and PREPARED miles.
