Load One Honored with Spirit of Giving Award
Each year, Wreaths Across America (WAA) depends on the dedication of professional drivers and trucking companies to fulfill its mission of remember, honor, and teach. Without their efforts, the nationwide tribute of laying veterans' wreaths at gravesites would be nearly impossible. While wreaths travel by planes, trains, ships, and even livestock trailers, the lion's share moves on trucks driven by professionals committed to honoring America's heroes.
In 2024 alone, more than 800 truckloads of wreaths were delivered, thanks to over 390 carriers and partners. During November and December-one of the busiest times in transportation-these drivers unite in an unparalleled show of respect and patriotism, making it possible for millions of veterans to be honored at over 4,900 locations, including Arlington National Cemetery.
Many participating drivers are military veterans themselves and describe their load of fresh balsam-fir wreaths as the most meaningful cargo they will ever transport. Their stories are often shared through WAA's "Trucking Tributes" and Wreaths Across America Radio.
Honored
Each year, WAA recognizes outstanding contributors with awards, including the James Prout Spirit of Giving Award, named in honor of the first trucker to volunteer to haul wreaths to Arlington. This year's recipient-the ninth honoree-is Load One Transportation and Logistics, LLC.
"It's humbling," said John Elliott, Executive Chairman of Load One and a U.S. Army and Army Reserves veteran. "We've done this every year not for accolades, but to give back. It's been rewarding to watch the charity grow. For me, being ex-military makes it extra special." Elliott recalls an especially moving moment when he witnessed grieving families at Arlington during an active conflict in Afghanistan. "That's when you truly understand the sacrifice. Some gave all."
Nick Miller, VP of Capacity at Load One, echoed the sentiment. While not a veteran himself, Miller's uncle served in Vietnam and passed away due to Agent Orange-related health issues. "Wreaths Across America is one of the best causes we work with every year. If you're unsure about getting involved, attend a wreath-laying. It will change your perspective within minutes."
Committed
Load One has been part of the mission since 2010, often stepping in when other carriers can't take a load. "They go the extra mile," said Courtney George, WAA Director of Transportation & Industry Relations. "They block broker fees to provide discounted services and ensure ceremonial wreaths are included in the Escort to Arlington. Last year alone, they moved five loads."
Specializing in expedited freight, Load One operates 600 trucks-mostly sprinter vans and straight trucks-making them nimble enough to break away from the main convoy to deliver ceremonial wreaths, then rejoin the route. "We're like the ambulance of the industry," Elliott explained. "When it's urgent, we're the ones you call."
For their commitment, flexibility, and unwavering support, Wreaths Across America proudly honored Load One with the 2024 James Prout Spirit of Giving Award. Their example serves as an inspiration to the entire trucking industry and a testament to what it means to serve-on and off the road.
