Since electronic logging devices have become the norm and personal conveyance has been a part of the ELD, I have always found it to be the most undefined duty line in my log book. There has always seemed to be a lot of guidance, but not any well defined rules for its use....

Mentoring

Mentoring We have been doing some planning for what our retirement might look like. As we get older we are finding that we are not enjoying the cold weather that home has during the Winter. We had visited some friends in Florida earlier this year and found the area to be very nice; however, we do not want to buy another house. After talking with other drivers about our dilemma we were shown a much less expensive option while keeping us near the neighborhood that we like. Over...

Most of you should be aware by now that California is currently requiring trucks who run in their state to be registered with CARB (California Air Resources Board) for CTC (Clean Truck Check) emissions testing. In 2024, trucks were required to create a profile and pay the annual fee on the CTC-VIS website, but emission testing was not required. Here in 2025, emissions tests are required by registered trucks twice per year....

For those who followed my generator installation, I left off with the need for an AGS module or Automatic Generator Start module. That was about a month ago, May has been a busy month. I have since researched, sourced, purchased and installed an AGS in the past few weeks....

Long Weekend Holiday weekends are always a double edged sword. It would have been nice to be home; however, working is a blessing too. The week before a holiday can also be unpredictable. In some cases, the customer might try to move as many pieces as possible. While other’s mindset is already in vacation mode rather than work. Each holiday, each customer and each year is a guess for us as to how much work we may or may not have. This year, this holiday and our customers we...

Back to Work After two weeks off, we finally made our way back to work. And what a week it was! We haven’t work that hard in a very long time. We left home on Monday night to stage for our pick up on Tuesday morning. We knew we would have a tight timeline and informed our contact. And of course, there was a slight delay. Fortunately, the trip went smoothly until we arrived at the delivery the next day. We then had to wait nearly two hours to get unloaded. The timing was tig...

Still Home Last week I had written that we were home getting some projects done around the house and taking care of doctor’s appointments for both humans and animal. This week, I am sorry to say that nothing has changed. We spent last week at home also. Why? Well, we had another home project to complete and more appointments for our dog, Rocky. In this blog, I want to talk about how it seems that when we are home we spend way more money than when we are working. It seems in...

Home Time

Down Time Last week was filled with so many things. Unfortunately, not much of our time was spent making money. Instead, we offloaded on Monday morning and then immediately deadheaded over 800 miles to get to our preferred maintenance shop for the truck’s 500,000 mile checkup. All was good but that still came at a hefty price. Also, there was a hotel stay. So there was money spent and not earned. After we got out of the shop we drove another 500 plus miles home as we had pr...

Each May, the nation observes Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to shine a spotlight on the importance of mental well-being for everyone. For those in the trucking industry, this month carries added significance. Driving a commercial vehicle isn’t just a job - it’s a lifestyle, one that often comes with extended isolation, long hours, and high stress. These factors can create a perfect storm for mental health challenges, which are too often overlooked or silently endu...
